Sailing The Seine Together: A Father & Daughter River Cruise With AmaWaterways

By Denise Parkhouse Published 21 August 2026

When Andrea decided to explore the Seine with her dad Gary, aged 76, it wasn't simply about choosing their next holiday. It was an opportunity to travel together, spend quality time as father and daughter and discover a part of France filled with history, culture and some very personal connections for their family. Their journey combined time in Paris with an AmaWaterways river cruise through Normandy aboard AmaLyra, travelling comfortably to France by Eurostar and adding time in the French capital before and after their cruise.

For Andrea, Normandy held particular significance. Her stepfather had served aboard HMS Belfast and participated in the D-Day campaign, making the opportunity to visit the Normandy landing beaches especially poignant. Alongside these powerful moments came very different experiences, from exploring Paris and sailing through the French countryside to visiting the gardens that inspired Claude Monet. What they remember most, however, isn't simply a list of places they visited. It's experiencing them together.

From an emotional day discovering Normandy's D-Day history to finding that Monet's Garden would become their favourite excursion, their journey showed just how well a river cruise can work for parents and adult children looking to travel together.

Travelling To Paris By Eurostar

The holiday began with one of the easiest ways to travel from the UK to Paris: Eurostar. The train was quick, comfortable and straightforward. Avoiding airport queues and arriving directly into central Paris made for a relaxed start to their trip, particularly when travelling with an older parent. There's also something rather enjoyable about beginning a European holiday by rail. Instead of flying over the landscape, the journey becomes part of the experience, and arriving in the heart of Paris means you can start exploring almost immediately.

Exploring Paris Before The Cruise

Adding time in Paris before boarding AmaLyra gave father and daughter the opportunity to settle into their holiday rather than travelling straight from the UK to the ship. They spent their time enjoying the city's famous sights, café culture and a little shopping, including a visit to the iconic Galeries Lafayette.

One of Andrea's top tips is to use a hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus if you only have a limited amount of time in Paris. It's an easy way to get your bearings and see many of the city's major landmarks without trying to cover everything on foot. Paris also offered plenty of flexibility. They could explore at their own pace, stop when they wanted to and simply enjoy being in the city before the very different experience of sailing through Normandy began.

Welcome Aboard AmaLyra

After their time exploring Paris, it was time to board AmaLyra and begin their journey along the Seine.

One of the things they immediately appreciated was the welcoming and relaxed atmosphere onboard. River cruise ships are much smaller than ocean cruise ships, making them easy to navigate and allowing guests and crew to quickly get to know one another. For Gary, aged 76, this made settling into life onboard particularly easy. Everything they needed was close at hand, while the ship provided a comfortable base from which they could explore Normandy without the need to constantly change hotels, pack and unpack or organise transport between destinations.

The crew also played a big part in their experience. Cruise Manager Vanessa stood out for her warmth, professionalism and knowledge, keeping everything running smoothly while always being approachable when guests needed help or advice. They also got to know Vinny and Florin in the bar, who quickly remembered guests and their preferences. Whether stopping for a drink before dinner or returning to the ship after a day exploring, these small personal touches helped create the friendly atmosphere they enjoyed throughout the cruise.

Life On Board AmaLyra

One of the pleasures of their river cruise was the balance between exploring ashore and having time to relax together onboard. Days could be filled with excursions and sightseeing, but returning to AmaLyra meant there was nothing else to organise. They could enjoy a meal, sit with a drink, watch the scenery from the ship or simply talk about everything they had seen that day.

As AmaLyra sailed along the Seine, the views constantly changed. Green countryside, small villages and historic towns passed by, and some of the quieter moments spent watching Normandy from the ship became an important part of the experience. They also enjoyed the social side of river cruising. With fewer guests than you would typically find on a large ocean cruise ship, it was easy to get to know fellow travellers, and they formed some lovely friendships during their time onboard.

For a father and adult daughter travelling together, this balance worked particularly well. There were plenty of experiences to share, but neither felt they had to be constantly sightseeing. They could enjoy the excursions that interested them, spend time relaxing onboard and experience the journey at a pace that suited them both. And with no need to pack and unpack as they travelled through Normandy, AmaLyra became their home for the journey rather than simply somewhere to sleep between destinations.

Normandy's D-Day Beaches: A Very Personal Visit

Of all the places they visited during their Seine river cruise, the Normandy D-Day landing beaches carried perhaps the greatest personal significance. Andrea's stepfather had served aboard HMS Belfast and participated in the D-Day campaign, giving their visit an important connection to their own family history.

Standing on the Normandy coastline brought the events of 6 June 1944 into much sharper focus. Today, the beaches are peaceful, making it difficult to comprehend the enormous scale of the Allied landings and the courage and sacrifice of those involved. This wasn't simply another excursion. Walking along the beaches and learning more about what happened there gave them time to reflect on the people behind the history and, for Andrea in particular, to think about her stepfather's own involvement in the events they were hearing about.

One of the things they appreciated was having time to absorb the significance of the places they visited rather than simply stopping for photographs and moving on. Their guide helped bring the history to life and provided context to events that many of us know from books and documentaries but can be difficult to fully comprehend until you stand where they happened. The experience left them wanting to learn more when they returned home. Sometimes the most memorable excursions aren't simply those that show you somewhere new, but those that encourage you to continue discovering the story long after your holiday has ended. Their day exploring Normandy's D-Day history was exactly that.

Pegasus Bridge & The Story Of The Glider Pilots

Another fascinating part of their exploration of Normandy was a visit to Pegasus Bridge, a location that played a crucial role during the opening hours of D-Day.

In the early hours of 6 June 1944, British airborne troops landed nearby in gliders with the mission of capturing the bridge and preventing German forces from using this important crossing. The operation was carefully planned and remarkably precise, with some of the gliders landing just metres from their intended targets. Hearing the story while standing in the place where it happened made the events feel remarkably real. Learning how troops arrived silently in the darkness, before the main Allied landings had begun, gave them a very different perspective on the planning and bravery involved in D-Day.

Pegasus Bridge also provided an interesting contrast to their time at the landing beaches. The beaches demonstrated the enormous scale of the Allied invasion, while here the focus was on a much smaller group of soldiers carrying out a highly specific mission that would help protect the eastern flank of the landings.

It was another excursion that stayed with them long after they returned to AmaLyra and added another layer to their understanding of Normandy's wartime history. Visiting both the D-Day landing beaches and Pegasus Bridge helped them piece together a much broader picture of the events of 6 June 1944 and the many individual stories behind them.

Monet's Garden At Giverny: Their Favourite Excursion

After the powerful history of Normandy's D-Day sites, a visit to Monet's Garden at Giverny offered a completely different experience. In fact, when looking back on their journey, this was their favourite excursion of the entire cruise.

The home and gardens of Claude Monet are instantly recognisable from some of the artist's most famous paintings, but seeing them in person is something quite different. Colourful flower borders fill the gardens, while pathways lead towards the famous Japanese bridge and water lily pond that provided Monet with inspiration for many years. It was an opportunity to slow down and simply enjoy their surroundings. After some of the more emotional experiences in Normandy, wandering through the gardens provided a peaceful contrast and showed another side to the region.

One of the things that makes Giverny so interesting is the connection between the paintings and the landscape. Standing beside the water garden and looking across the lily pond makes it much easier to understand why Monet returned to the same scenes again and again in his work. You certainly don't need to be an art expert to enjoy a visit. The gardens themselves are beautiful, and the combination of colour, tranquillity and history made Giverny one of those places that was even better in person than they had expected.

Among all the fascinating places they experienced along the Seine, Monet's Garden was the one they both chose as their favourite.

The Pleasure Of Sailing The Seine

While the excursions were undoubtedly some of the highlights of their journey, part of the enjoyment came from simply being on the Seine. Sailing through Normandy offers a completely different perspective on this part of France. From AmaLyra, they could watch green countryside, small riverside communities and historic towns slowly pass by, with plenty of time to sit back and enjoy the changing scenery.

This slower pace worked particularly well for father and daughter. Days could be filled with fascinating excursions, but there were also quieter periods when they could relax onboard, enjoy the views and talk about everything they had experienced together.

Unlike a touring holiday where much of the journey between destinations can be spent on the road, travelling by river means the journey itself becomes part of the holiday. There is something wonderfully relaxing about watching the landscape unfold while your next destination comes to you. Those quieter moments became just as much a part of the experience as the places they visited ashore. It was this combination of discovery and downtime that they particularly enjoyed about travelling the Seine by river.

Returning To Paris

After their journey through Normandy, Andrea and Gary returned to Paris for a final stay before travelling home.

Having time in the city both before and after their river cruise worked particularly well. At the beginning of the holiday, Paris provided the excitement of arriving somewhere new, while their return gave them the opportunity to enjoy the city at a more relaxed pace and reflect on everything they had experienced along the Seine. With the main sightseeing no longer feeling quite so important, there was time to enjoy more of the city's cafés, restaurants and neighbourhoods rather than trying to fit everything into a single day.

It also demonstrated how easily a Seine river cruise can be combined with additional time in Paris. Rather than simply travelling home as soon as the cruise ends, adding a night or two can turn the journey into a longer French holiday and allow you to experience the capital at your own pace. It was a fitting way to finish a journey that had taken them from the energy of Paris to the peaceful landscapes, gardens and remarkable history of Normandy.

Andrea & Gary's Top 5 Memories From The Seine

Looking back on their time in Paris and Normandy, their experiences ranged from powerful historical sites to beautiful gardens and peaceful days on the river. These are the moments that stood out most:

1. Monet's Garden At Giverny

Their favourite excursion of the entire trip. The colourful gardens, famous Japanese bridge and water lily pond were every bit as beautiful as they had hoped, and provided a wonderfully peaceful day exploring together.

2. Visiting The Normandy D-Day Landing Beaches

With Andrea's family connection to D-Day through her stepfather's service aboard HMS Belfast, visiting the Normandy beaches had particular significance. Standing on the coastline and learning more about the events of 6 June 1944 made this one of the most moving experiences of their journey.

3. Discovering The Story Of Pegasus Bridge

Learning about the British airborne troops and glider pilots who captured Pegasus Bridge during the opening hours of D-Day gave them another fascinating perspective on Normandy's wartime history.

4. The People They Met Along The Way

Some of their favourite memories came from the people rather than the places. From Vanessa, Vinny and Florin onboard AmaLyra to the fellow guests they got to know during the cruise, the friendly atmosphere became an important part of their holiday and some wonderful friendships were formed along the way.

5. Simply Spending Time Together

Perhaps the most important memory of all was having the opportunity to travel together as father and daughter. Whether exploring Paris, sharing an excursion, sitting down for dinner or watching Normandy pass by from AmaLyra, the cruise gave them something increasingly valuable: uninterrupted time to enjoy each other's company and create new memories together.

Our View: Why River Cruising Works So Well For Parents & Adult Children

At The River Cruise Company, we often speak to families looking for a holiday that parents and their adult children can genuinely enjoy together, and river cruising can be a particularly good fit.

Andrea and Gary's journey is a great example. At 76, Gary was able to enjoy fascinating excursions, time exploring Paris and the historical sites of Normandy, while the relaxed nature of river cruising meant there was also plenty of opportunity to slow down and enjoy the journey. One of the biggest advantages is flexibility. You don't necessarily have to spend every moment together. Different excursions and activity levels can allow each person to choose what interests them, before meeting again for dinner, a drink or simply some time together onboard.

There's also the convenience. Once you've unpacked, your accommodation travels with you. There's no changing hotels every couple of nights or repeatedly moving luggage, yet you're still waking up somewhere new and discovering different destinations along the way.

For families travelling with an older parent, choosing the right itinerary and cruise line is important. Walking distances, excursion activity levels, mobility, travel arrangements and the pace of the itinerary can all make a difference. Our team can help compare the options and find a river cruise that works for everyone travelling. Most importantly, their experience highlights something that isn't always mentioned when choosing a holiday: the value of simply having time together.

A river cruise provides plenty to see and do, but it also creates those quieter moments between destinations. Sitting over dinner, watching the scenery from the ship or talking about the day's experiences can become every bit as memorable as the places you visit. That balance of shared experiences, independence and time together was what made their Seine river cruise so special.

Excursions, meals and time onboard can be enjoyed together, while there is also the freedom to choose different activities or simply relax when you want to. That balance worked particularly well for Andrea and Gary. They could explore fascinating destinations together while still enjoying the slower pace and quieter moments that are such an important part of river cruising.

What Can You See On A Seine River Cruise?

Seine river cruises typically combine Paris with the towns, countryside, history and culture of Normandy. Depending on your chosen itinerary, highlights can include Monet's Garden at Giverny, Rouen, Normandy's D-Day landing beaches and other historic towns and villages along the river.

One of the attractions of the Seine is the variety. Art, history, beautiful scenery and French culture can all feature within a single itinerary.

Can You Visit The Normandy D-Day Beaches On A Seine River Cruise?

Yes, many Seine river cruise itineraries offer excursions to the Normandy D-Day landing beaches, although the exact excursions and locations visited vary between cruise lines and departures.

This became one of the most meaningful parts of Andrea and Gary's AmaWaterways journey, particularly because of Andrea's family connection to the D-Day campaign.

If visiting particular D-Day sites is important to you, speak to our team before booking so we can help you compare itineraries and excursion options.

Is Monet's Garden Included On Seine River Cruises?

Giverny and Monet's House and Gardens feature on many Seine river cruise itineraries, particularly during the months when the gardens are open. However, inclusions vary between cruise lines and departure dates, so it's always worth checking the individual itinerary.

Yes. Eurostar can be a very convenient way for UK travellers to reach Paris for a Seine river cruise, particularly as services arrive directly into the centre of the city.

Travelling by Eurostar was comfortable and straightforward for Andrea and Gary, and it also avoided the need to travel through an airport before beginning their holiday.

Is It Worth Staying In Paris Before Or After A Seine River Cruise?

Adding stays at both ends of the cruise allowed them to enjoy the capital at a much more relaxed pace.
