Emerald Lumi: Emerald Cruises’ First Seine River Ship for 2027
Emerald Cruises is expanding its European river cruise programme in 2027 with the launch of Emerald Lumi, the first Emerald Cruises Star-Ship to sail on the Seine.
For anyone familiar with Emerald, this is an interesting development. The cruise line already sails many of Europe’s best-known rivers, including the Rhine, Danube, Douro, Rhône and Saône, but until now the Seine has been missing from its collection. That changes in 2027, when the brand-new Emerald Lumi begins sailing round trip from Paris through Normandy.
Purpose-built for the Seine, Emerald Lumi will carry a maximum of 130 guests and has been designed specifically for the dimensions of the river. Its smaller size will allow the ship to sail into the heart of Paris and directly into Honfleur, something not every Seine river ship is able to do. For existing Emerald guests, it means being able to experience a completely new river without changing cruise line. For those considering the Seine for the first time, it adds another contemporary river ship and cruise style to an already varied choice of operators.
Why the Seine makes sense for Emerald Cruises
The Seine has become one of Europe’s most popular river cruise choices, and it is easy to understand why. Emerald Lumi will become part of Emerald Cruises’ Star-Ship family, so while this video does not show Lumi itself, it gives a good feel for the contemporary design, relaxed atmosphere and onboard features that define the Emerald river cruise experience.
Emerald Lumi has been designed specifically for the Seine and will be noticeably smaller than many of Emerald Cruises’ other European river ships. At 110 metres long, the ship will carry a maximum of 130 guests across 66 cabins and suites, supported by a crew of around 52. That smaller footprint is important on the Seine because it allows Emerald Lumi to reach places such as central Paris and Honfleur that are not accessible to every river ship.
Onboard, the style will be familiar to anyone who has travelled with Emerald before: contemporary, relaxed and designed around plenty of light and river views. Accommodation will include Emerald Panorama Balcony Suites, Grand Balcony Suites and an Owner’s One-Bedroom Suite, alongside standard staterooms and a small number of single cabins. The Panorama Balcony Suites feature Emerald’s all-weather balcony concept, where the upper section of the window can be lowered at the touch of a button to create an open-air feel without losing space from the cabin.
Public areas include the Reflections Restaurant for main meals and the Horizon Bar & Lounge, which acts as one of the principal social spaces onboard. One of Emerald’s most recognisable river ship features will also appear on Emerald Lumi: the heated indoor pool at the rear of the ship, which transforms into a cinema on selected evenings.
Up on the Sun Deck there will be a walking track, putting green, games area and Sky Barbecue, while elsewhere onboard guests will find a wellness area, fitness room and self-service laundry.
We particularly like that Emerald has retained many of the features existing guests already associate with its Star-Ships rather than creating a completely different product simply because Lumi is sailing the Seine.
The real difference is its scale. With just 130 guests onboard and a ship specifically designed around the river it will sail, Emerald Lumi should feel quite intimate while still offering the facilities and contemporary styling that have become part of the Emerald experience.
Sensations of the Seine & Normandy
Emerald Lumi will spend its inaugural season sailing the new eight-day Sensations of the Seine & Normandy itinerary, beginning and ending in Paris. The route follows the Seine through northern France, visiting Vernon, Rouen, Honfleur, Les Andelys and La Roche-Guyon before returning to the capital. It is a classic Seine journey in many ways, combining Impressionist art, medieval towns, Normandy history and French food, but Emerald has also included several experiences that help give its new itinerary its own identity.

What makes Emerald’s Seine itinerary different?
One of the biggest advantages of Emerald Lumi’s purpose-built design is its ability to cruise directly into Honfleur. This colourful harbour town at the mouth of the Seine has long been one of Normandy’s most appealing places to visit, but not every river ship can dock there. Some Seine itineraries instead visit Honfleur by coach from another port. Emerald Lumi is scheduled to spend two days in Honfleur, giving guests more time to explore the town and surrounding Normandy coast.
The itinerary also includes a full-day excursion focused on the Allied D-Day Landing Beaches, one of the most important historical experiences available on a Seine river cruise. For those more interested in Normandy’s food and countryside, Emerald also brings in local experiences such as oyster tasting in Honfleur and a visit to a traditional cider farm.
Art is another major part of the journey. From Vernon, guests can visit Giverny and the former home and gardens of Claude Monet. Our View
We think Emerald Lumi is an important addition to the Seine for 2027. It is not simply another new river ship. This is the first time Emerald Cruises will have a Star-Ship dedicated to the Seine, opening up Paris and Normandy to customers who may already know and enjoy the Emerald style from elsewhere in Europe.
The fact that Lumi has been purpose-built for this river is also important. At 110 metres and with a maximum of 130 guests, its size allows Emerald to include direct access into Honfleur while still retaining many of the facilities associated with its larger Star-Ships.
For us, Honfleur is one of the strongest aspects of the itinerary. Being able to arrive by river rather than visit as a coach excursion gives guests more time in a town that deserves to be more than a short sightseeing stop. We also like the balance of the itinerary. There is the art and scenery of Giverny, medieval history in Rouen, the D-Day Landing Beaches, smaller Seine Valley towns and several opportunities to experience Normandy’s food and countryside.
EmeraldACTIVE adds another dimension for guests who like to do more than traditional sightseeing, while the contemporary styling onboard should particularly appeal to travellers who prefer a relaxed rather than formal atmosphere.
The Seine already has a very good choice of river cruise operators, so Emerald Lumi will be entering a competitive market. That is good news for customers. The question is increasingly not simply whether you want to cruise the Seine, but which ship, cruise line and style of itinerary will suit you best.
