TUI Maya Review: My First Experience Onboard a TUI River Cruise

By Darcy Hood Published 15 June 2026

Having joined The River Cruise Company in November 2025, I was still relatively new to the world of river cruising when I had the chance to stay onboard TUI Maya in March 2026. As someone who speaks to customers about river cruises most days, it was a great opportunity to see for myself what a TUI River Cruise actually feels like in practice.

There is only so much you can learn from brochures and itineraries. Spending time onboard gave me a much clearer sense of the atmosphere, the style of service and the type of traveller TUI appeals to. It also helped me understand why river cruising continues to be such a popular choice for first-time cruisers.

My ship visit took place in Amsterdam, Netherlands.   Sadly we did not sail anywhere but got to spend a night on-board and experience all the ship's facilities and appreciate the TUI experienc

My first impressions of TUI Maya

During my stay, I experienced one of the ship’s Superior French Balcony Cabins. It felt bright, modern and comfortable, with floor-to-ceiling balcony doors that brought in plenty of natural light and made the river views feel like part of the room.

The cabin struck a good balance. It was smart and contemporary without feeling overdone, and it had the kind of layout that makes it easy to settle in quickly. On a river cruise, that matters. Your cabin is not just somewhere to sleep, it becomes your base as the scenery changes outside.

From the moment I stepped onboard, I was also impressed by the service. The crew were friendly, approachable and always willing to help, which created a warm and welcoming atmosphere across the ship.

Who is a TUI River Cruise suited to?

After spending time onboard TUI Maya, I can see why TUI River Cruises appeal to such a wide range of travellers. They feel particularly well suited to those who are new to river cruising and want something that feels straightforward, relaxed and easy to enjoy.

They also work well for:
• Couples looking for a comfortable way to explore several destinations in one trip
• Solo travellers who want a sociable but manageable holiday style
• Guests who prefer a less formal onboard atmosphere
• Travellers who like the option to mix organised excursions with independent exploring

That flexibility is one of the strongest parts of the TUI approach. Some guests will enjoy guided sightseeing, while others may prefer to wander through a town at their own pace, stop for a coffee or simply enjoy a slower day ashore.

Dining onboard TUI Maya

One of the highlights of my stay was the dining. We travelled on an all-inclusive basis, which meant a wide range of drinks were available throughout the day and evening, including wine, beer, cocktails, branded spirits and speciality coffees.

For dinner, we ate in Verdastro Bistro, where guests can enjoy a three-course meal with a good level of choice. What stood out to me was the flexibility. If a particular dish was not quite what you fancied, there were alternatives available, which made the whole experience feel relaxed and guest-friendly.

The following morning, I visited the breakfast buffet and found a strong mix of continental and cooked options. There were cereals, pastries and fresh fruit, alongside cooked breakfast items, eggs, waffles and pancakes. It felt generous without being overwhelming, and there was plenty of choice.

Evenings onboard

After dinner, we headed to the Observatory Lounge for the evening entertainment. On the night of our visit, TUI’s onboard entertainment team performed a Motown-themed show, which created a lively atmosphere and rounded off the day really well.

One thing that does help TUI stand out is its dedicated in-house entertainment team. On some river cruises, evenings can be quite low key, but TUI offers more variety, with live music, themed performances, quizzes, game shows and even silent discos on some sailings.

It does not make the experience feel loud or over the top. It simply gives guests a bit more choice in the evenings, especially those who are coming to river cruising for the first time.

What is included on a TUI River Cruise?

One of the reasons TUI River Cruises appeal to so many first-time guests is that the holiday feels easy to understand. A lot is included in the fare, which takes some of the stress out of planning.

This generally includes:
• Return flights
• Checked luggage
• Airport transfers
• Full Board Plus dining onboard
• Complimentary Wi-Fi
• All onboard tips and service charges
• A dedicated Cruise Manager throughout the journey

Breakfast includes tea, coffee and juices, while lunch and dinner include wine, beer and soft drinks as part of Full Board Plus. On sailings of five nights or more, guests can also enjoy a Gala Dinner during the cruise.

Excursions and flexibility ashore

One feature that sets TUI apart from many other river cruise lines is that excursions are not included as standard. Instead, guests choose the ones they want, either before departure or once onboard.

That will not suit absolutely everyone, but I can see why many guests like it. It means you only pay for the experiences that genuinely interest you. If you want a guided city tour, wine tasting or cultural visit, you can add that in. If you would rather explore independently, you have that freedom too.

This can be especially appealing for repeat river cruisers who may already know some of the ports of call and prefer a more flexible approach.

Where can you sail with TUI?

TUI River Cruises offers itineraries across some of Europe’s best-known waterways, including the Rhine, Danube, Moselle, Main, the Dutch and Belgian waterways, and Portugal’s Douro. TUI also offers Nile cruises in Egypt for those looking for something quite different.

That range gives guests plenty of choice, whether they are drawn to classic European cities, vineyard-lined landscapes or more historic and cultural journeys further afield.

Dress code and overall atmosphere

Another question that often comes up from first-time river cruisers is what to pack. TUI keeps things fairly relaxed, with a smart-casual dress code across the ship. Guests can dress comfortably during the day and evening, and there is no need for formal wear.

That relaxed feel is part of the appeal. It makes the onboard atmosphere approachable and easy, particularly for travellers who want a comfortable holiday rather than anything too formal.

River cruising for solo travellers

River cruising has become increasingly popular with solo travellers, and TUI offers a good range of sailings dedicated to solo guests.

These cruises provide a welcoming atmosphere, the chance to meet like-minded travellers and the reassurance of travelling in a well-organised way without having to plan every detail alone. For many solo travellers, that balance of independence and sociability is a big part of the appeal.

Final thoughts

My stay onboard TUI Maya gave me a valuable first-hand introduction to river cruising and a much better understanding of the TUI River Cruises experience. From the comfortable cabin and warm service to the quality dining, flexible excursion model and lively evening entertainment, it was easy to see why TUI appeals to so many guests.

For anyone considering their first river cruise, TUI offers an approachable and comfortable way to explore some of Europe’s most scenic waterways while enjoying the ease of an organised holiday. It feels relaxed, accessible and well suited to travellers who want to see more without the pace feeling too demanding.

I boarded TUI Maya wanting to understand what a TUI River Cruise was really like. I left with a much clearer picture of why river cruising has become so popular, particularly for those looking for a relaxed way to explore Europe's cities and waterways without constantly packing and unpacking
